Daily Prayer for January 5

A New Song

Taking a deep breath, I reached for my briefcase, opened the car door and walked with my friend, Susan, to the house where I would be speaking to a large Bible study and prayer group. Our hostess led us into her spacious, beautifully decorated home. She guided us to the buffet, pausing occasionally to introduce me to smiling people who seemed to be everywhere.

Balancing my plate, napkin, flatware and beverage while threading my way through the crowd, I found a place to sit. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw someone advancing toward me. I quickly prepared to acknowledge another introduction. I looked up and saw a tall, attractive woman clutching a gray leather book—Prayers That Avail Much, Special Edition. Without introductions, she held up the book and declared, “This book changed my life! I have given away at least one hundred copies.”

“That book changed my life, too!” I exclaimed. Looking disappointed she said, “Oh, but I thought you were the author.” Smiling, I answered, “I am. The prayers in that book are the prayers that changed my life. Now I have the privilege of sharing them with others.”

Prayer:

Father-God, you are the Living Word.  This morning I am overthrowing with a pleasing theme…my tongue is like the pen of a ready writer.  My heart is spilling beauty and goodness, shaping the rushing river into words.  God, you are real; you are the God who heard my cry, and drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog. You set my feet upon a rock, and made my steps secure. Thank you for putting a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to you, my God. O LORD my God, you multiplied your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward me, and none can compare with you! I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told.
